Mel has always had an interest in creativity, business and technology and how they work together and has 24 years experience across multiple industries.
Mel is passionate about business models and and strategy and started in the creative and digital industries working with BBC, Royal Shakespeare Company, PACT and Viadeo before working with companies from the Open Data, Tech, Manufacturing sectors.
Mel completed her MSc in film in 1994 studying scriptwriting and also produced her first film (JIGSAW) set in Lisbon. Mel started her career working as an assistant to Lynne Ramsay (Ratcatcher) before moving through the ranks, line producing one of the UK's first digital feature films. (ONE LIFE STAND) Mel has also worked for Endemol, BBC, Brighter Pictures and developed a slate of horror films working with Stuart Lee and other talented individuals.
At the same time Mel noticed there was a lack of business skills in the film industry so created and delivered training and consulting for creative and digital companies working with Skillset, Pact, Ravensbourne, Met Film School among others.
In 2000 Mel took a sabbatical as a sales and business consultant working with corporate companies for SBR consulting including: Npower, Business in the Community, Robert Half and Pathway Recruitment.
In 2011 she directed Social Media Week London and in 2007 won the ‘Socially responsive’ category at MIPTV’s 360 degree competition. In 2012 Mel was the Theme Champion for Business Models and Growth for the Creative Industries Knowledge Transfer Network.
Mel currently works as a Programme Leader and Associate for the Open Data Institute, a Growth Coach specialising in Access to Finance for the Business Growth Services and as a digital business strategist. She also has an Advanced Train the Trainer qualification and has trained other trainers from Ravensbourne, BBH and the Open Data Institute.
Her first job at university was selling books door to door in the Smoky Mountains where she knocked on over 6000 doors, avoiding houses with ornamental car parts and got addicted to frozen custard.
